June
27 : Helen Keller Day
Helen
Adams Keller was born on June 27, 1880, in Tuscumbia, a small
rural town in Northwest Alabama, USA. After being struck by
illness, Helen loses both her sight and hearing. No one is ever
sure exactly what disease she had, but some people think it
was scarlet fever.
Anne Sullivan
was Helen’s teacher and she used to come to the Keller home
and teach letters by signing into her hand (“manual sign language”).Helen
then went to Perkins Institution for the Blind in Boston, for
her first formal education.
Helen Keller
was the first deaf and blind person to earn a college degree.
She graduated from Radcliffe College, with honors, in 1904.
It's Hellen Keller day. Her tenacity, resilience, and advocacy
efforts are inspiring
Here is one of the famous Hellen Keller quotes:
The human being is born with an incurable capacity for making
the best of things.
I who am blind can give one hint to those who see - one admonition
to those who would make full use of the gift of sight: Use your
eyes as if tomorrow you would be stricken blind. And the same
method can be applied to other senses. Hear the music of voices,
the song of a bird, the mighty strains of an orchestra, as if
you would be stricken deaf to-morrow. Touch each object you
want to touch as if tomorrow your tactile sense would fail.
Smell the perfume of flowers, taste with relish each morsel,
as if tomorrow you could never smell and taste again. Make the
most of every sense; glory in all the facets of pleasure and
beauty which the world reveals to you through the several means
of contact which Nature provides.
