Zambia is bordered by seven countries and was a former British colony known as Northern Rhodesia before independence. The longest border is the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The capital of Zambia is Lusaka. The earlier capital was Livingstone.

Zambia gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1964.

The name comes from the Zambesi River and means “heart of all.”

The Kwacha is the Zambian monetary unit.

Zambia has three distinct seasons. It is warm and wet from December to April, cool and dry from May to August. The average temperatures in summer range from 25°C to 35°C and in winter from 6°C to 24°C.

Iron and copper have been mined in Zambia for over 2000 years. The exports are copper/cobalt 64%, electricity, tobacco, flowers and cotton. It imports machinery, petroleum products, transportation equipment, fertilizer, electricity, foodstuffs and clothing

The official language in Zambia is English. In addition to English, there are several other vernaculars spoken here include Kaonda, Bemba, Lozi, Lunda, Luvale, Nyanja, Tonga and others.

Victoria Falls is located on the Zambesi River. This is one of the seven natural wonders of the world. It is referred to by African as “Musi-o-Tunyi” (The smoke that thunders.)

Nshima is the staple food that is eaten in Zambia. It is made out of ground maize and water.
