Skill Development with an eye on employment is
the need of the hour and Shanti Sahyog is a widely known
NGO working for Skill Development in Delhi/NCR since 2004.
There is a growing realization that having an educational
degree, does not always help in getting a job commensurate
with one’s qualification. However, a minimum qualification
of Class X combined with some vocational skill leads to
employment opportunities.
CUTTING
& TAILORING
Funded by the Delhi Government, this vocational training
was started in 2010 in our Gender Resource Center (GRC)
in DDA Flats Kalkaji. For 7 years, every six months, 50
women, drawn from the 16 slums near our Center, were trained,
examined and awarded Certificates. After the closure of
the GRC in 2016, our Kalkaji Center is currently run in
collaboration with SINGER & Rotary Club of Delhi Cama
Place. The trainees follow the syllabus approved by SINGER,
designed to create employment opportunities for them.
Besides the prescribed syllabus, the women are also taught
to make wall hangings, fancy bags, purses, files &
folders which are sold at Diwali Melas and other forums.
The
aim is to provide Cutting & Tailoring Skills to underprivileged
girls /women with a view to help them earn a living by
stitching clothes from their homes (self-employment) or
get a job at a boutique / export house and supplement
the family income, to improve their quality of life. Top
5 students are given sewing machines on completing the
course. After the training, Shanti Sahyog provides hand
holding support to help the beneficiaries open their own
tailoring shop individually or as a collective. Trainees
are also taken for exposure visits and counseled on the
marketing aspects of a tailoring unit; sampling and quality
control; Self Help Groups (SHG) as Tailoring Unit Co-operatives
and management of SHGs. They are also encouraged to setting
up shop, with an interest free loan from the Government
or Self Help Group.
