Brief About Fatehgarh
Sahib District
The historic & pious District of Fatehgarh Sahib
came into existence on 13th April 1992, Baisakhi Day, deriving its
name 'Fatehgarh Sahib' from Sahibzada Fateh Singh, the youngest
son of 10th Guru Gobind Singh, who were bricked alive by the orders
of Suba Sirhind.The Tenth Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh fought against
the atrocities of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb, due to which he bore
the wrath of the Dynasty. The youngest Sahibzadas of Guru Ji namely
Sahibzada Zorawar Singh & Sahibzada Fateh Singh alongwith their
grandmother Mata Gujri were martyred here. The Gurudwara Fatehgarh
Sahib has been constructed at this place in their holy memory.
It is bounded by Ludhiana and Ropar in the North,
Patiala in the South, Ropar and Patiala in the East and Ludhiana
in the West. It is situated between 30 degree-38' North & 16
degree-27' East and is 50 Kms. away from Chandigarh, capital of
Punjab. The economy of the district depends mainly on agriculture
and allied activities.
POPULATION
AND AREA
The district comprises of 454 Revenue Estates (Villages),
out of which Bassi Pathana, Sirhind, Amloh, Gobindgarh, Khamano
and Khera are the major towns of the district. The total area of
the district is 1,18,219 hectares, out of which 1,15,511 hectares
is rural area and 2,708 hectares is urban area. As per 2001 census,
the population of the district is 5,39,657 (1,51,569 urban and 3,88,569
rural population). 3,51,446 persons of the district are literate,
out of which 2,44,671 are rural and 1,06,775 are urban, which comes
out to be 71.10%. Out of which, 78.85% are males and 68.60% are
females.
INFRASRUCTURE
FACILITIES
There is 100% electrification in the district. All the
villages and towns are connected by all weather pucca roads. Pepsu
Roadways Transport Corporation, Punjab Roadways and a good number
of Private Transport Operators are covering almost all the villages
by road transport. Major towns of the district like Sirhind, Gobindgarh
and Bassi Pathana apart from other small towns and villages of the
district are connected with the State capital and rest of the country
by `Rail'. There are 93 Post Offices and 66 Telegraphic Offices
in the district. Total number of banks branches is 80 , out of which
22 branches belong to Fatehgarh Sahib Central Coop. Bank Ltd.. There
are 49 branches of Commercial Banks, 5 branches of Malwa Gramin
Bank and 4 Primary Agricultural Development Banks for meeting credit
requirements of the people.
CLIMATE,
RAINFALL AND SOIL
The soil of the district is mainly of alluvial type but
it also has loam to heavy loam and sandy to sandy loam soils in
certain parts of the district. The climate of the district is extreme
being very hot in summer and cold in winter. The temperature ranges
from 45 degree C in May/June to 4 degree C in December/January.
It has sub-tropical continental monsoon climate. The rainfall is
comparatively satisfactory.
