It is made up of a collection of islands; 333 islands to be exact, and only one-third are inhabited.

Fiji was a British colony for 96 years until it gained its independence in 1970.

The largest island, Viti Levu, holds the capital city of Suva, the majority of Fiji’s population, and the highest peak in the country, Mount Tomanivi.

There is an average of 70 inches of rainfall each year in Fiji.

The average temperature ranges from 68 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit.

Total land area of Fiji is 7045 square miles, with 702 miles of coastline.

In Fijian villages, only the chief can wear hats and sunglasses. The top of the head is sacred, and is not meant to be touched.

The International Date Line runs through Fiji’s island of Taveuni, so you can stand with one foot in the present date, and the other in the previous date.

The tagimaucia, a beautiful red-and-white flowering plant that resembles the hibiscus, blooms in only one place in the world: on the banks of the Tagimaucia River in the mountains of Taveuni Island.

The original settlers of Fiji, who came to the islands over 3000 years ago, are now called the Lapita people.
