In 1593, Vasco Nunez de Balboa became to first European to discover than Panama was just a thin strip separating the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.

The Panamanian currency is called the balboa after him but they mainly use US dollars.

The canal was opened in 1914. Since then more than a million ships have passed through it.

The canal was controlled by the US until 1999 when it was finally transferred to Panama.

Panama hats are mainly made in Ecuador.

They were called Panama hats because they were shipped from Ecuador to Panama before being exported worldwide.
